Charitable Donations
Introduction
SIG plc is aware that it has community obligations, particularly within neighbourhoods where it does business. We have a general duty to avoid conducting business which is against the best interests of these communities. We have a positive duty as well as a self interest, to improve the well being of individuals and to use our best endeavours to enhance community life. A positive approach to our community relations is in the best long term interests of our company and of those who work within it.
Scope and Approval Process
For 2011 SIG announced the introduction of a new initiative to use funds to provide matching of donations in respect of monies raised by our employees for charitable causes (e.g. monies raised from sponsored events, or site event days etc.)
In summary, SIG employees involved in sponsored events or site event days (where more than 1 employee is raising money for charity) are able to apply to SIG for a matched donation to their charity up to a maximum of £500 (or local equivalent), provided that the event promotes SIG and involves either customers, suppliers or members of the community*
*Please note it is not possible to make matching contributions to events which already receive the support of an SIG Operating Company.
All applications must be submitted in writing with supporting documentation within 3 calendar months of the last day of the event. Support for a particular event/activity/charity is subject to the approval of the Charities Committee.
To apply for a contribution, employees should send an email to charity@sigplc.co.uk and a Charity Sponsorship Request Form (in local language) will be sent out for completion and return.
Donations are to be made on a quarterly basis until the set annual amount has been exhausted.
Areas of Focus
SIG would particularly support:
• Charities that enhance our engagement in the community
• Charities that assist in managing the sustainability of the local environment
• Charities that educate young people and that assist disadvantaged groups
Areas not Funded
Generally, SIG will not make contributions to certain causes or activities. These include, but are not limited to the following:
• Political parties
• Books, research papers or articles in professional journals
• Faith related causes, organisations or activities
• Anything that conflicts with our Ethics Policy
Employee Contributions
SIG actively encourages employees to support charities through attendance at events and through 'Payroll Giving Schemes' which allow donations to be made to charities direct from salary.
The Group Chief Executive has lead responsibility for policy implementation within the Group and this policy is signed by the Group Chief Executive to demonstrate the Board’s commitment. A copy of this policy is also posted on the SIG plc web site www.sigplc.com.
